about

A collection of folk songs reimagined for the first series of the podcast project Old Tunes Fresh Takes, 'it runs too strong' borrows from the electronic soundscapes of introspective artists like James Blake and Bon Iver, married with the warmth and percussive playfulness of acts like Múm and Haiku Salut to give new perspectives to the songs of our past.

The collection opens with 'Geordie' with layers of bass guitar set against pattering percussion and field recordings. 'My Son David' follows with creeping autotune, emphasising the songs gradual sense of dread - an additional few verses makes the Cain and Abel allegory more explicit.

Harsh, mechanical tones adorn the defiant and grisly monologue of 'The Brisk Lad' before hitting the sultry pulse and trumpet lament of 'Bitter Withy' while 'Sally + Wlliam' - a Bonny and Clyde rewrite of the ethically questionable ballad Young William - offers a darkly menacing flourish. Closing the volume is 'Spare Me The Life' which presents a garbled, unsettling reflection on opener 'Geordie'.

'it runs too strong' is the first release in an ongoing project to explore the idea of heritage in a digital world where 'place' is being eroded. While it has never been easier to adopt a new musical idiom from any culture around the world, this is an attempt by Yorkshire native Hevelwood to explore music rooted in English culture and Englishness divorced from any pejorative, modern conception.

These songs are ours to explore and help to open up musical dialogues with the past. But throughout the process of interpretation it becomes clear they often need contextualising and updating to make sense in our modern times.

You can hear Tim's approach to the takes and in-depth introductions to the songs by listening to series 1 of Old Tunes Fresh Takes, available on Soundcloud and all good podcasting platforms.
